Tom Pelissero is reporting that Minnesota Vikings nose tackle Michael Pierce is opting out of the 2020 season because of concerns about Covid-19.
Pierce was the biggest free agent acquisition from Minnesota’s offseason (no pun intended). Coaches were hoping that he would replace Linval Joseph. Instead, Minnesota’s defensive line becomes even more uncertain.
Pierce’s decision essentially guarantees that Shamar Stephen will be on the final roster. It also opens significant opportunity for younger players, Armon Watts foremost among them.
This will obviously be disappointing news for the Minnesota Vikings and their fans, but Pierce needs to make the decision that is in the best interest for not only himself but also his family.
