Minnesota Vikings News Roundup: Spielman Beefs Up Roster, Adds 11 UDFAs

By this point, you’ve likely gotten just about all the draft analysis you can handle. As a result, we’ve decided to pivot into a focus on the UDFAs who your Minnesota Vikings have brought in to compete for roster spots. There are some really intriguing names in this list, and don’t be surprised if a handful make it onto the final roster. From there, we cover some of the draft grades around the interwebs before ending things with a recap of TVG content and some of the broader Vikings chatter.

The Minnesota Vikings, The Roster, and the UDFAs

A few days ago, the Minnesota Vikings published an article indicating that they’ve added eleven UDFAs to their offseason roster.

  • Turner Bernard, LS
  • Tuf Borland, LB
  • Christian Elliss, LB
  • Zeandae Johnson, DL
  • Myron Mitchell, WR
  • Riley Patterson, K
  • Whop Philyor, WR
  • Blake Proehl, WR
  • A.J. Rose, RB
  • Jordan Scott, NT
  • Zach Von Rosenberg, P

There are at least a few notable details about this list. First, take a look at the competition on special teams. At this point, Patterson may be the front runner to win the starting kicker job. He’s got power, and he received some attention before the draft as someone who might get snagged in the later rounds. Minnesota also felt like it was best to bring in roster competition at punter and long snapper, so we’ll see if these UDFAs can win the job from the current Vikings.

Otherwise, one of the more notable components of the list rests in the three wide receivers. Again, the goal certainly appears to be increased competition at a particular position. Fans, by and large, aren’t totally sold on Chad Beebe at WR3, and the leadership may have similar concerns. Keep an eye on Proehl. The early discussion suggests that he may end up being a diamond in the rough.

The Draft Grades

The Draft Team‘s Josh Frey has been doing a round-by-round, pick-by-pick breakdown of the draft. Fans may be particularly interested in his third round article since Minnesota had so many selections.

PFF has been relatively optimistic about Minnesota’s draft, ranking it in its top-ten: “To get two great value picks at easily the Vikings’ biggest position group of need is nothing short of a home run for the franchise. Christian Darrisaw should have really been in play for the Vikings at Pick 14 when they were sitting on the clock, so to get him after a trade back was exceptional. They turned that Pick 14 into two immediate starters by using one of the third-rounders they got back to select Wyatt Davis. Davis would have been a borderline first-rounder had he declared a year ago, but a knee issue in 2020 dropped him down the board.”

USA Today also got in on the action, giving Minnesota a B grade. They explained themselves: “It doesn’t take much to imagine the utter glee with which Vikings general manager Rick Spielman and head coach Mike Zimmer turned in the card with Christian Darrisaw’s name on it with the 23rd pick. Minnesota had a desperate need at left tackle, and Darrisaw fills it right away with a nice combination of pass-protecting elan and alpha-dog power moves.”

TVG and The Broader Vikings Chatter

TVG got some great contributions this week from Cole and Mimir. Cole’s article argues that Minnesota’s offense has no excuse in 2021, and Mimir comes by to discuss his round 1 mock draft with yours truly. Otherwise, there was an article recommending some football books, a podcast episode, and a few words on how the Packers made a mess of their draft.

As for the broader Vikings discussion, there has been plenty. Purple Pain Forums continues to churn out plenty of Vikings talk. Purple PTSD‘s Dustin Baker discusses the MVP chatter surrounding Kirk Cousins. Vikings Territory responded to the Everson Griffen rumors. Nick from The Skol Network talks about the salary cap and signing the various rookies.

Conclusion

I know it’s become commonplace for us to end thing with a thanks to you for reading, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t sincere. We do really appreciate you taking the time to read our news roundups. This week’s main focus was on the UDFAs and how they might impact the Minnesota Vikings’ roster. I, for one, am both excited and nervous about the idea of Patterson winning the kicking job.
