Updated Vikings Roster Projection: Defense

As promised, here is our updated Vikings roster projection, beginning with the defense. For a reminder of our initial projections, take a look at our educated guess before training camp.

D-Line:

Initial Projection:

Updated Projection:

The Difference: Pierce, Willekes, and Zettel are out – Johnson, Ngakoue, and Yarbrough are in.

We didn’t foresee the Covid opt-outs, so we are giving ourselves a free pass with Pierce. His vacated spot makes room for Ngakoue. Pierce’s decision to sit also plays into our decision to keep Johnson, who will provide much needed depth and power at DT. We think Willekes will get signed to the practice squad, and Yarbrough seems to offer more upside than Zettel.

Linebacker:

Initial Projection:

Updated Projection:

  • Anthony Barr
  • Troy Dye
  • Jordan Fehr
  • Eric Kendricks
  • Eric Wilson

The Difference: Gedeon is out – Jordan Fehr in.

This one comes down to injuries. As we’ve indicated, the Vikings LB depth has taken a hit throughout training camp. The biggest thing for the Vikings is to have reliable special teams production from their backup LBs. Gedeon’s injury likely opens a spot for someone else. Fehr gets this one.

Corner:

Initial Projection:

Updated Projection:

  • Kris Boyd
  • Nevelle Clarke
  • Cameron Dantzler
  • Jeff Gladney
  • Holton Hill
  • Mike Hughes

The Difference: Hand is out.

Hand gets moved to the practice squad, opening one position in the secondary. Rather than bring another corner, the Vikings opt to keep an extra safety. The Vikings have obviously been concerned about their safety depth given that they’ve brought in free agents to compete at safety.

Safety:

Initial Projection:

Updated Projection:

The Difference: Meadors is in.

The Vikings have obviously been concerned about their safety depth. As a result, Minnesota switched Meadors from corner to safety at the beginning of camp. His combination of youth and experience on Minnesota’s roster give him the upper hand to make the roster.

There it is, folks, in all its glory: our Vikings roster projection for the defense. On Wednesday, we’ll take a look at the offense.
